ST WYNWALLOW, LANDEWEDNACK - THE LIZARD

The church of St Wynwallow stands in the parish of Landewednack, a hamlet just outside the Lizard Village. It was founded in 600AD but the present structure dates to the 12th Century. It is the most Southerly Church in mainland Britain. The church is built of local serpentine stone and granite, featuring some beautiful carvings from local stone. It was in St Wynwallow’s that the last sermon was preached in Cornish. For more historical information go to:

ST MARY'S, CADGWITH

St Mary's Church is situated on the footpath which descends from the public car park down into the small fishing village of Cadgwith. This tiny metal building was erected in 1895 as a mission church for the village fishermen. It is a chapel of ease to St Rumon, the parish church of Ruan Minor.

The church is one of the few remaining “tin tabernacles” in the UK. There are only sixty-two tin tabernacle churches left which are open for the public and still hold regular services.

Today St Mary’s still serves as a mission church for the community of Cadgwith, and throughout the year we hold services every 3rd Sunday in the month at 6.00pm.

ST GRADA AND HOLY CROSS, RUAN MINOR

The Church of St Grada and Holy Cross sits on its own in an isolated field at Grade, south west of Ruan Minor. This small, tranquil haven is what Celtic spirituality would refer to as a ‘thin place’, palpably close to God.

The church has its roots in the late 13th Century, whilst much was rebuilt in 1862/1863. Originally the church stood in its own parish of St Grade but was united with Ruan Minor and Ruan Major in 1934 to form the parish of Grade-Ruan.

We hold a regular sung evensong (BCP) throughout the year and an annual pet service. All are welcome to join us.

In March 2017 Andrew T wrote the following review on TripAdvisor:

‘For those who are sensitive to other worldly atmospheres I feel that you will be well rewarded, for there is a strong sense that one could almost slip past some illusory veil and into a far more unhurried existence. I suppose in some way or other that is exactly what happens to me at each visit, for fanciful or not, many pleasurable hours have been whiled away here, far more than seem to have been measured by the hour hand of my watch’.

ST RUMON, RUAN MINOR

The parish church of St Rumon is dedicated to the Celtic Saint St Rumonus, an Irish missionary of the 5th or 6th Century. The village itself was established by the Romans when Cadgwith was an important trading port. Originally separate parishes, the parish of St Ruan is now combined with that of St Grade.

The church has a Celtic feel and dates back to the 13th century; its tower being added in the 16th century. The building is tiny and intimate, with a ‘ship like’ interior. The lectern is made of Serpentine, a beautiful and rare local stone. Around the church and graveyard there are a number of touching memorials.

We are a small but dedicated congregation and use both the Book of Common Prayer and Common Worship.

ST PETER'S, COVERACK

Dedicated to St Peter, the small, whitewashed church overlooks the harbour in Coverack. Built in 1885, the church features a pulpit built from serpentine, a stone which is unique to the Lizard peninsula.

We are within the parish of St Keverne and a spiritual focus for Coverack and the local area. We welcome all to the church both locals and visitors alike. We are usually open for prayer and all our services are family friendly. Our main service on a Sunday is at 9.30 and on a fifth Sunday there is a united benefice service usually at one of the larger churches in the benefice.

ST KEVERNE CHURCH, ST KEVERNE

St Keverne church is the spiritual centre of the village. It is the place where many Christian and cultural rites of passage take place, from baptisms through to weddings and funerals. We are family friendly and welcome all who come to join us in worship; for those in need of a quiet sanctuary or place of prayer, and equally for those who are interested in the church’s heritage.

The parish church is accessed via a flight of steps from the central square in the village of St Keverne. It is one of the few churches in Cornwall to have a spire. Positioned as it is, just inland of the treacherous waters around the manacle rocks, its spire is a useful landmark for sailors. Indeed, there is a monument in the church to the wreck of the SS Mohegan who went down in 1898 with the loss of 106 lives.

The church was founded in the 13th century and many features date back to the 15th century. More recent reordering has sensitively provided the church with a parish meeting room, kitchen and accessible toilet facilities. Maintaining its historic treasures whilst responding to modern needs.

The church is historically significant as the place the Cornish Rebellion of 1497 started and also for the part it played in the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549.
